Perkawinan Adat Batak Toba

ABSTRACT

In the traditional custom of Batak Toba, every significant event, like marriage, is usually preceded by traditional ritual. There are at least two main reasons of why the ritual is consodered important. Firstly, for the people of Batak Toba marriage is the beginning of a new kinship. Marrriage is not only between two persons, but also between two groups, i.e. boru and hulahula. Secondly, marriage is important because it has also a transcendental meaning.
